A doctor is much like a car mechanic. A car mechanic may fix your car for you to go wherever you want, but a car mechanic cannot tell you where to go. Psychiatrists are car mechanics that make people take cars to a car mechanic. They are the cancer of medicine that regular oncology cannot cure. It is medicine gone rogue and feeding itself rather than curing anything. It has indeed nothing to cure.
Psychiatry originated from the discipline of psychology, a science that systematically explored human behavior and developed an extensive understanding of the psychological aspects of humanity beyond physical anatomy. The medical perspective views the human body as a complex system with potential malfunctions, requiring various approaches to address and rectify different health issues. The physicians of the past did not waste their time with the invisible illnesses of the mind that were a waste of time when sick and curable patients are begging for your help.
Psychiatrists took the map of mental anatomy of psychologists and converted them into illnesses and pretended to be able to cure the mentally ill from their invisible ailments: that is the birth of the DSM. And once the psychiatrists have convinced the doctors they were doctors too, they let them in their practice and lent them their titles and reputation. After all, psychology was new and mystical at the time, and an illness that is invisible is easy to make seem successfully cured. It’s all a question of framing and psychiatry is the art of framing.
And so, once the psychiatrists got the doctors’ titles, they could easily convince lawmakers to give them more power to force themselves on other people. After all, they seem to be doctors who know what they are doing. They seem like they are doing the right thing to the public by allowing the now-called doctors to force themselves on patients who don’t seem to know they are sick. The public gets easily scared of monsters they do not see, and psychiatrists are both the scaremongers and the heroes. Like in the movie Arrival, the language and techniques of the psychiatrists are perfectly circular.
Sophiatry has built itself as the ultimate rival of psychiatry. It attempts to heal people with simple mental remedies. It rejects the appellation of psychology as it uses well known wisdom that has nothing to do with how someone feels about oneself, but with what it is to be human. It aims to cure what the industry of psyche has kept ill to cultivate profit: a real business of self-hate that deserves nothing but utter deconstruction.
